THE TEST OF AUDITORY
COMPREHENSION
The Test of Auditory
Comprehension was standardized on a national sample
of children four to seventeen years old, with
moderate through profound hearing losses. Test
results produce a profile of the child's performance
on a continuum of auditory tasks, and provide a basis
for instruction with the ASC and ASC-PS. The TAC also
allows comparison of results by age, degree of
hearing loss, and type of placement. The TAC is also
widely used, for children and adults, as the primary
instrument for pre-and post-assessment of the
effectiveness of cochlear implants.
The ten subtests of the TAC
begin with simple auditory discrimination tasks and
conclude by assessing the child's understanding of
complex stories given with a competing-message
background. The child responds to recorded messages
by pointing to one of several pictures.
Administration averages thirty minutes and requires
only the child's usual amplification, a reasonably
quiet room, and a program-stop or standard cassette
player.

AUDIO WORKSHEETS
The Audio Worksheets comprise 86 programmed training
and assessment exercises based on ASC objectives and
augmenting the ASC activities. They provide
extensively field-tested, individualized material for
reading and non-reading students. All messages are
presented on program-stop cassettes; they are
repeated in 72 exercises with a competing message at
+6dB, and in 40 exercises at 0dB signal/noise. The
student responds to these cues by marking the
self-checking worksheets. Each exercise includes
reproducible worksheet masters and a teacher's guide
with directions, format example, and audio script.

System FORE
System FORE is a
criterion-referenced curriculum in language, reading,
and mathematics. FORE begins with an informal
assessment to produce a profile of the child's
current mastery. This profile becomes an
Individualized Education Plan, and shows the next
instructional steps in the FORE curriculum. The
teacher selects materials to meet the child's needs,
and notes their mastery on his profile. This
indicates he has also mastered the objective to which
the materials are correlated. In this way the teacher
always has a current, accurate IEP for the child.
Each volume contains a short guide to administration
and a set of all needed record forms.
System FORE was designed by
the Los Angeles Unified School District and by the
West Linn School District. The findings of five years
of field testing by six BEH agencies and by many
public and private schools have been coordinated

Frequently Asked Questions
About Inservice:
ASIPS training is commonly available at colleges with
hearing-impaired programs, and the FORE Handbook
contains a complete inservice guide to System FORE.
The Ordinal Scales are standard textbooks in several
of the California State Colleges and Universities,
and various programs in testing and assessment use
them.
About the SCOSD:
When will Foreworks have an assessment-materials kit
to go with the Ordinal Scales? We were working to
this end when, apparently, Lakeshore decided to sell
only individual items. They're still a good source.
So you will each have to gather your own materials.
This is not really such a bad thing: We remember with
great fondness the early days of the "functional
assessment movement," when graduate students
competed to design the most simple and direct methods
for finding a child's level of performance, using
common classroom and household materials.
About ASIPS:
The Test of Auditory Comprehension (TAC) is out of
print. Why? Because L.A. County Schools decided to
reclaim the copyright and cancel our license to
publish ASIPS. They say they have no plans to publish
it elsewhere. We're in the book business, not the
lawsuit business, so when we run out of inventory for
an ASIPS title, it's gone for good. This will
eventually happen to the other ASIPS titles, too, but
not for a while. Does Foreworks have normative data
for hearing children with auditory-processing
problems? No. We suggest using the Auditory Skills
Curriculum as a criterion-referenced assessment
guide. That is, present such students with a range of
tasks from the Curriculum, and where they have
problems, teach the requisite skills. (Some people
think this approach is simpleminded. We think it is
elegant.)
About System FORE:
This is now pretty much out of print. That's fine
with us, since it has served its purpose. For quite a
few of the twenty-five years we printed it, and the
ten years that L.A. City Schools did it, it was an
essential source for developing curricula. It is our
fond assumption that it was possibly the most
influential and most copied curriculum in the history
of U.S. Special Education. At one time it was the
backbone of most Federal Curriculum centers, and was
used throughout American Samoa, Guam, Micronesia, by
the BIA, everywhere isolated or itinerant teachers
worked, and in thousands of special education
classrooms. The idea was that a hierarchy of skills
based on human development made a better model for
curricula than most textbook series, and that regular
education would eventually recognize the worth of
this approach and convert to individualized
instruction. It's still a good idea.
